A substantial early Victorian mahogany chest of drawers dating to approximately 1840–1860, with an unusual arrangement of four short drawers over three graduated full-width drawers. Traditional construction includes hand-cut dovetailed drawers, wide boarded back, moulded top and plinth base, with all locks remaining intact although no key is present. The drawer fronts show clear circular evidence of previous handle positions around the present turned wooden knobs, indicating that the hardware has been altered during the chest's life, although the exact original handle arrangement cannot be established with certainty. The mahogany has a rich aged colour and attractive patina, with extensive historic scratches, marks and wear throughout. The top has a substantial old split together with surface and edge wear, while pieces of cockbeading are missing from the bottom drawer and there are further age-related knocks and losses. A characterful unrestored 19th-century chest offering particularly generous storage and excellent potential for sympathetic restoration.
