An attractive and substantially constructed antique Victorian wooden storage chest or carriage trunk, believed to date from the late 19th century, circa 1880–1900. This characterful example features traditional solid timber plank construction with a generously proportioned rectangular body, substantial hinged lid and distinctive darker hardwood reinforcing frames to both ends, secured with numerous traditional fixings. Particularly noteworthy is the impressive internal lid construction, featuring substantial timber battens with diagonal cross bracing, providing additional strength and rigidity and demonstrating the practical quality of the original craftsmanship. The chest retains its aged iron drop carrying handles to either end, three metal lid hinges and central iron hasp fastening, all displaying an appealing period patina. The beautifully weathered natural timber has developed a wonderful mellow colour with attractive grain, historic marks and tonal variations throughout, giving the piece an authentic country house and farmhouse appearance. The lid opens to reveal a spacious plank-lined interior, ideal for storing blankets, bedding, linens or other household items. Its generous proportions also make it an attractive decorative trunk or rustic coffee table. A charming and practical piece of antique country furniture with considerable character, interesting construction details and a strong decorative presence. Presented in good antique condition with age-related knocks, scratches, surface marks, historic staining, timber wear and oxidation to the ironwork, all consistent with its considerable age and previous use.
